DAILY ART FIX: Museums cancel Obama Portrait Artist Kehinde Wiley exhibition in wake of sexual misconduct allegations

Art world links which caught my eye…

Kehinde Wiley’s Reputation is Catching Up With Him

I wrote before on Kehinde Wiley, the artist behind Barak Obama’s terrible presidential portrait. Even back in 2018, there was an unsettling buzz about Wiley’s misconduct:

“Wiley gets additional virtue status points as a gay man. You might think there was no connection between which set of genitals an artist enjoys and the quality of their work, but the establishment art world knows better than you. Wiley makes leering references to his preferences in his works. The persistent rumors about his casting couch demands on his models aren’t relevant here. But Wiley does provide other hints.”

Now multiple men have publicly accused Wiley of sexual assault and even rape, leading to the cancellation of museum exhibits. Wiley denies the charges.

“The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) has called off an upcoming exhibition by painter Kehinde Wiley in light of recent allegations of sexual misconduct made against the artist by several men. The Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Neb., and the Pérez Art Museum Miami have also quietly put plans to stage Wiley’s work on hold.”

  1. It is unsurprising.

In an age where the “male gaze” frequently cancels truly great art , from Rubens to Picasso, no red blooded man is exempt, but this fellow (talented at least technically) has been given a conspicuous pass. I frankly find his work disagreeable, a great deal due to the obvious leering lechery. He clearly fetishizes his models, I havent a problem with that per se, many artists have and beautiful paintings the result, but that there had been such a double standard I found frustrating. That and the whole left wing, self congratulating, celebrity culture I found alienating and distasteful .

I’d be lying if I weren’t gloating just a bit.

    Have a good Independence Day🇺🇸

  2. Good observations. As far as the guy’s technical abilities goes, he uses a projector to trace his images and much of the painting is done by “assistants” so who knows what skill is really there. I too have a bit of shameful joy in the elitist comedown, but I pray for humility and for everyone to look towards God.

  3. yes, agreed , I’m working ( thus far unsuccessfully)on resisting the gratification of this unfortunate situation and yet hoping for some cultural reconciliation.
